More thoughts on traditions

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Last week, I talked about the silliness of getting stressed out about whether to call a decorated evergreen a “Christmas tree” or a “holiday tree.”

As additional evidence that traditions matter, regardless of where they came from, observe the general attitude toward snow. Some people like and some don’t. Yet when Christmas is approaching, it seems everyone wants snow! Snow somehow reminds people of Christmas. And that’s a bit odd, considering that snow (as well as evergreens) is more reminiscent of Europe and Colonial America than of the Holy Land. It may snow in the Holy Land, and evergreens may grow there. Yet there’s nothing about this in the Biblical account of Christ’s birth, as far as I know.

Let’s be honest. Snow reminds us of such happy things as storybooks, movies, childhood, visits to grandparents, hot chocolate, cookies, tobogganing, snowball fights. Some of these are Christmas-related, simply because Christmas is celebrated in winter—at least if you live in the Northern Hemisphere.

Tradition is important to humans. Most of our Christmas traditions really have very little to do with Christmas. Enjoy.

Clothing and weather: just an observation

Monday, November 9th, 2009

As the weather gets cooler, it’s interesting to watch how people adjust their mode of dress.

Some people habitually wear as little clothing as possible, and continue to wear shorts and tank tops well into fall. Personally, I like to wear as much clothing as possible, because a) I like cooler weather, and b) I like the aesthetically pleasing effect of layers, with all the different color, pattern, and texture combinations.

So on any given fall day, you might see the whole range, from shorts and tank tops to jackets and furry boots. The other thing I notice, however, is that people tend to respond more to clouds vs. sun than to high vs. low temperature. It could be cold and sunny, and you see a tendency toward less clothing. Warm and overcast, however, and you see more clothing.

I have a feeling that this is more psychological than an actual sensation of being hot or cold.

Just an interesting observation.

Do you want it or need it?

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Do you have something on your “wish list” that seems to be evading you? Most often it’s money, health, or relationship(s) where people feel a void in their lives.

But if you’re constantly telling yourself, everyone else, God, and/or the universe that you need the thing you don’t have, you’re going to feel frustrated, fearful, and unhappy. Is that where you sometimes find yourself? Frustration, fear, and unhappiness are negative emotions that will push away, rather than pull toward you, the thing(s) you want.

So here’s what you do instead: deeply desire the thing you want, and be happy without it. This will create positive emotions and the atmosphere into which good things feel welcome.

Try it and see what happens.
